India-An Enigma, a Paradox, a Mystery

Nothing can prepare you for India. It is a land of contrasts. There ia a saying that goes, "Whatever you say about India, the reverse is also true." It is a huge extremely diverse country with more than 1600 languages and dialects. Population is over one billion, growing one million each month and is forecast to exceed China's early in the current century. It is the world's largest democracy but is by no means egalitarian with gaps between the rich and poor, the beautiful and the ugly are startling, frightening and incomprehensible to western eyes.
