Cambodia-A Wonderful Surprise

To our generation "Phnom Penh, Cambodia" conjures up images of Richard M. Nixon on television lying to the American people denying that the Vietnam War had been expanded to that country even while the bombs were dropping on its people. That was over 25 years ago. Today, after many governmental changes, it is a vibrant city of 1.5 million. There is a distinct Indian influence. Buddhism is the dominant religion.

Angkor-An incomparable temple complex

At the height of the Khmer civilization, 900-1300 C.E, an incredible complex of 292 temples was built in Cambodia. It was a spectacular administrative and religious center spread over 200 kilometers. A dozen Khmer kings built these temples. Angkor Wat, the most famous site, is the largest religious site in the world even today. It was built by Suryavarman II between 1112 and 1152 C.E., 360 years before Columbus discovered America, to honor the Buddhist god Vishnu and later used as his final resting place.
