Travel is the ultimate education. Books, classes, teachers, tapes, films, CDs and DVDs all serve specific purposes and are useful. But to really get to know a place, someone, an event or field of knowledge you must go to the source. Until you step off the ship, airplane, train or whatever and see, hear, taste and smell a city or country, you will never really understand it. This also applies to any worthwhile endeavor or profession. There is no substitute for an on site visit. Note how our best newscasters, who have tremendous support staffs, go to the ends of the earth to provide the best and most interesting coverage.

Anne & Bob in South Africa.

Travel is not always easy. It takes a special effort to get off your butt, make complex arrangements, finance a trip, leave home and successfully execute the planned itinerary. As a matter of fact it can be an overwhelming hassle . The biggest surprise can be returning home to find some of your friends failed to notice you were gone! Many could care less about your experiences. Your journal and photographs are tolerated by your best friends and ignored by most. You are bursting with information and say, "Let me tell you about Mount Everest, the Hermitage, Saint Peter's Basilica or meeting Fidel Castro." Their response is most likely to be something like, "Let me show you my new SUV."

Ah, but the personal rewards are infinite. First, is the change of scenery, food and faces. It's all new and different! Change can be exciting in itself. The normal daily routine is interrupted. Second, you are immersed in an educational environment learning other people's customs and habits. Third, is a renewed perspective. The world, its people, opportunities and problems will take on a new meaning. For example, your understanding of 9/11 is quite different when you have experienced it from the other side of the world as we did. Fourth, you will change. I have known ultra conservatives who have liberalized there thinking and appreciate the need to share the wealth after visiting frightened, undernourished children in a South African township.
